Early Lobden Golfers

Mr
Stevens, who was manager of the Williams, Deacon, and Manchester and Salford
Bank (formerly Messrs Clement Royds & Co), died at his residence in
Blackpool - where he had removed with his family for the benefit of his health -
on the 14th of July, at the age of 57. He had been unable to attend at the bank
since the 7th of May, and the cause of his illness and death was malignant
disease of the liver. He was a native of Kilmarnock, N.B., and came to Rochdale
about 37 yrs ago as a clerk in Messrs Royds Bank, a position he had previously
held in a Scottish Bank. The amalgamation which changed the Bank to its present
name took place in 1881, the late Mr E E M Royds was manager, but not long
afterwards he retired and the deceased was appointed in his place. In politics
he was a Liberal and was a member of Milton Congregational Church. He was

He
originated the Rochdale Golf Club, which was established in February 1889. He
left a widow and three sons, and one daughter, and his youngest son is in the
Bank which he managed. The remains were brought to Rochdale and interred in the
cemetery on the 17th July.
It is said that Mr Allan Stevens
was the man who brought Golf to Whitworth and Rochdale.
